The Rivieras

This track California Sun, The Rivieras only real hit was the last big hit before the British invasion on the American Billboard chart in 1964.

A one hit wonder and a storming great record, as many one hit wonders are. The lead vocalist left the band after this single to join the Marines! Pretty likely he was shipped off to Vietnam.

If America hadn't gotten involved in the Vietnam war (apart from all the obvious results) there would have been a lot more great music produced. So many young men (in bands) got sent off to fight.

The Vogues

This all male vocal group from Pennsylvania was named after Vogue Terrace, which was a popular teenage hangout in their hometown of North Versailles.

This track reached number 4 in 1965 and the band did pretty well in the 60s, slowly fading away throughout the 1970s, their sound becoming more and more out of favour...

This is a blinder though. I'm always surprised no one has sampled the opening line...
