I've posted about Lee Dorsey before, he's damn good that's why. This track though, is pretty different to most of the tracks you'll know by this New Orleans master.
This feels like a funeral march, the drums almost impossibly slow. If you only know his 60s material then I suggest checking the Yes We Can album he made with Allen Toussaint, it's pretty damn special.
Lee Dorsey - Freedom For The Stallion
The story tells of a "spy boy" or "spy dog" i.e. a lookout for one band of Indians encountering the "flag boy" or guidon carrier for another band. He threatens to set the group's flag on fire.
Interestingly, Dr John started his music career as a guitarist until his left index finger was damaged by a gunshot while defending a fellow musician.
Dr John injects his usual New Orleans creole drawl to great effect.

Lee Dorsey is a talent like few others. His humour and style showing through always, creating a very relaxed style for his music. He epitomized New Orleans like few others could manage.
This soul beast though is possibly his roughest tune. A smooth soul vocal over decidedly tough drums.
Lee Dorsey or otherwise known as Kid Chocolate (his boxing moniker) will always be my favourite New Orleans star. Awesome.
Lee Dorsey - A Lover Was Born
Lee Dorsey has a stable of hits unlike most other New Orleans artist. He's solid gold.
From a partnership with Allen Toussaint, who seems to be an architect of half of the music that came out of city in 1960s, Dorsey enjoyed many many hits, often with the Meters as his backing band.
Before his career took off as a singer he was a light heavyweight boxer in Portland (after the war) and he also ran a car body repair shop in New Orleans. Hmmm useful information overload.
