Lloyd Price

Ready4betty Lloyd Price shot to fame with Lawdy Miss Claudy a stormer of an 8 bar blues piece in 1952. He was set for great things and then he 'luckily' got drafted to Korea in 1954. When he returned Little Richard had taken his gig and his chauffeur was recording for the studio as well!!

He soon returned to form though with Personality and a version of the classic song Stagger Lee which sold over a million copies.

This song, Ready For Betty is a bit later. The single says 1970 but I have a feeling it was from his 1963 album Misty. I may be wrong though. Would love to be set straight about this.
Anyhow the track has a nice swing to it.

The Dirtbombs

DirtbombsThe Dirtbombs, the garage band from Detroit are of course, excellent. This is one of my favourites by them. It's actually the B-side of this single; Ode to a black man. The original is by Lou Rawls but this is way better. The talking intro piece just really cracks it off.

The Dirtbombs, as you might expect from a Detroit garage band are excellent live. I've seen them several times. Don't Sleep on the slept.

The Vapours

Vapors The Vapours were a UK (surrey based) new wave band. They had a couple of hits, this one was by far the biggest hit reaching number 3 in the UK.

The song is allegedly about masturbation!?

They have lots of other great records as well. Don't see this as a one hit wonder. News at Ten is excellent as is the album New Clear Days. Go forth and listen...

Slip Harpo

SlimSlim Harpo was a blues harmonica player. The Harpo element of his namer refers to the instrument he became famous for being so good at - the harmonica.

Slim became the backbone of the Louisiana swamp blues movement and his tracks were covered by The Rolling Stones, Them, The Yardbirds and The Pretty things. He's pretty important.

This track probably isn't typical of his main output but it's really great so I'm putting it in.

Joe Jackson

Joejackson This track is about the moment when you get ready to go out on a big night. I'm sure many many girls danced around to this getting ready from the 1970s until now. And anyone that has ever DJed knows how important it is to get the girls dancing!

Joe was one of a few English singers that challenged the punk sound in the 1970s to bring a new poppier sound that paved the way for New Wave in the mainstream.

He was born David but adopted the name Joe based on his resemblance to to the character Joe 90!
